AUTHOR Rudine Sims Bishop

Rudine Sims Bishop is a familiar name in the realms of children’s literature, multicultural education, and literacy education. Professor Emerita of Education at The Ohio State University, she is an educator, mentor, researcher, and writer. Dr. Bishop has received several awards and honors, including the 2007 Outstanding Elementary Language Arts Educator Award from the National Council of Teachers of English.

Dr. Bishop has contributed significantly to the scholarship of African-American children’s literature. Her work includes Shadow and Substance: Afro-American Experience in Contemporary Children’s Literature, which addresses key issues that have become touchstones in the study of multicultural literature and Free Within Ourselves: The Development of African American Children’s Literature, which covers the expanse of literature for children written and illustrated by African Americans from the nineteenth century to the present day.
